We will be reminiscing about the shenanigans of the last year, and cracking open some mystery beers… (Homebrew that we have either made or acquired from fellow homebrews, that we completely forgotten about, so we have no clue what’s actually in the bottle.) We are going to be hanging Brandon Edwards, and crushing some “summer beers”. Summer beers are technically not a specific style, but are the beers or beverages that you reach for when you are planning to mow the lawn, spend the day at the beach, or just relax on the deck while enjoying a beautiful Michigan summer! So grab an Oberon, an All Day, a Shandy, or even a six pack of seltzer, and come hang out with us!
We continue to talk beer, homebrewing, and whatever else happens to come up. This show’s topic is open ended, so basically a whole episode where we go off topic because…there isn’t one. It’ll be a blast as always! Beyond the beer talk we’ll talk some about future plans for the show including breweries / people we hope to be talking to later this year, plans to be on popular podcasting services, the ever-promised new opening, and all sorts of other stuff.

We talk with Ellie Maddelein, Assistant Brewer at Five Shores Brewing and a graduate of WMU’s Sustainable Brewing program.
We are going to have a very special show this week. With the help of our special guest, David Jones, we will be tasting some of the aged Bell’s beer that we were able to pick up from “Larry’s Cellar” at Bell’s General Store. We are going to be sampling Expedition Stout from 1994, 95, and 96, as well as 2004, 07, 08, and 09. We also have some early 2000’s Eccentric Ale and Cherry Stout that we may get into. So dig in your cellar, blow the dust off of something you have been saving and join us as we try some beer that’s old enough to buy beer!
We talk about best practices for making mead from the comfort of your own home. We’ll touch on a lot of introductory topics like water, honey varietals, nutrients, yeast choice and so on. Depending on how it goes we may make it a multi part series where we go into different styles of mead in later episodes like big sugary Schramm’s style mead, or bubbly refreshing session meads. Skål!
We hang out with John Mallett, VP of Operations at Bell’s Brewery, and literally the guy that wrote the book on Malt (pick up the Brewing Elements book, it’s seriously great). John has had a long career in the beer industry doing everything from brewing, to engineering, to teaching, and operations work. And obviously also writing! Join us as we pick his brain and, as always, just have a great time hanging out!
